Integrated Smart Systems and Hybrid Electronics Cluster

Smart Objects and Sensors: The key advantage of using flexible and printed electronics for the realization of functional objects and sensors is the possibility to combine and integrate, on the same substrate, multiple electronic components to create smart systems in a cost-efficient and mass-producible way. Functional printing allows the integration of different components such as sensors, actuators, batteries, antennas, transistor circuits, memories, or displays. Robotics is also a growing and important application area for high-performance flexible sensors as electronic skin (e-skin). This artificial electronic skin demonstrates how flexible, hexagonal sensor cells, each containing a microprocessor and embedded sensors for contact, acceleration, proximity, and temperature, can be networked across large surfaces to create a continuous tactile interface.

Smart Textiles: Smart textiles are textile structures with integrated sensing, actuation, power, communication, and computation. They have moved from isolated prototypes to early industrialization across wearables and ambient/embedded environments. The field has shifted from wellness-centric gadgets toward medical grade applications, from rigid add-ons to fabric native electronics, and from single devices to system level deployments in buildings, furniture, and vehicles.

3D Structural Electronics: Printing electronics on 3D shapes for 3D structural electronics opens up completely new opportunities e.g. for the design of OLED based lighting, for the application of organic PV on any kind of surfaces or the realization of smart functions on flexible, stretchable, and even natural tissues.
